“C” is for Crayons, Crafts and Candy Bars

Ahh, crayons!  How far we have come from the box of 8  thick ones I had in first grade and the SO COOL box of 64 with the built in sharpener  when I got  a bit older (even though I never did know what to do with "Burnt Umber").  Even now, I LOVE opening a new box, seeing all the paper intact on unbroken crayons and looking at the perfectly shaped tips.  Recently, when opening a new box of crayons, I had a great inspiration for a kid's party — one with a crayon theme!

You can find online templates for crayon shapes and create cute invitations very inexpensively.  Copy the crayon shape onto colored cardstock and invite young artists to a Crafty Crayon party.  You can also find crayon shapes at teaching supply stores like United Art.    Use a bright primary color scheme of red, yellow, blue and green to decorate the party area.  You don't need to purchase expensive crayon-themed supplies, just buy plates, cups,

napkins and flatware in the bright colors of crayons.

Since this is a "crafty crayon" party, crafts will be a big part of the event.

PRESCHOOLERS

For younger kids, spread butcher paper on a table and provide "bundles" of 3-4 different colored crayons held together with a rubber band.  Let the young artists experiment with their "rainbow crayons".  These make great favors to take home, too!

Have preschoolers make crayon rubbings using a variety of textured items like leaves, sandpaper, coins, etc.  They can rub different colors of crayons on their sides across the items to make their own "masterpiece".

SCHOOL -AGE KIDS

Older kids can make their own crayons from broken crayons using muffin tins or candy molds.  The easy directions are located here. This craft requires adult interaction to bake the new crayons, but the kids can have a blast breaking the crayons and deciding which colors to use in their colorful crayon.

It is also fun to make colorful sun catchers using old crayons and wax paper. Use a food grater or potato peeler to make crayon shavings (make sure not to re-use the grater or peeler for food!)   Fold a large sheet of wax paper in half and reopen it.  Sprinkle the crayon shavings on one half of the wax paper in an interesting pattern and refold the paper.   Put the wax paper between two sheets of paper and press a low-heat, dry iron onto it for a minute or so.  The crayon shavings will melt and the colors will mix together a bit. Once the wax paper cools (place in the freezer to speed up the process) the kids can cut out their shapes and punch holes through their tops and string yarn or cord through the hole to create their sun catchers.

Serve kid-friendly finger foods and make a cupcake tower for dessert.  Frost cupcakes in bright colors and put them on a cupcake stand, or just place them on a cake stand.  You can find Crayola© cupcake toppers at craft supply stores and put one on each cupcake.   Serve several flavors of bright colored punch or juice in clear glasses in keeping with your colorful theme.

A really fun touch for your Crafty Crayon party is to have a colorful "candy bar" and let your young guests fill goodie bags with an assortment of candies in bright crayon colors.

We did a crayon theme for my son's 1st bday (he'll be 5 soon). One thing we did that the kids loved was pretzel stick crayons. We wrapped pretzel rods in construction paper colored to look like a crayon wrapper and then dipped the ends in matching candy melts. I also made the cake to look like a box of crayons and ordered crayon plates, hats, etc from Crayola. The kids had a blast! The best part was we got everything; crayons and coloring books for the kids, etc dirt cheap at the back to school sales!

Will you see the new Twilight movie New Moon on Friday?
