3 Tips & a Trick for Point-n-Clicker Photographers

Nosy

My first digital camera was a Canon PowerShot SD110 Digital Elph with 3.2 mega pixels.  I wanted a camera small enough to easily fit in my pocket or purse so that I could take photos anywhere, all the time and blog about them.  Honestly, I wasn't even interested in photography as much as I was into having photos to trick out my blog.  And even though I have grown a tremendous love of photography I've never learned how to do much more than aim and fire.

Three easy tips to get some great shots with a Point-n-Click camera:

  1. Find and use macro mode – on my Canon PowerShot macro mode is represented by a little flower.  This will allow you to get super close to your object and create a nice blurry background (also known as depth of field).Like this:
  2. Petals

  3. While you are still in macro/flower mode, put your camera up against an object like a wall, table or tree and snap away. You don't even need to see exactly what you are shooting – although most point-n-click cameras have a nice screen to view your potential photo.Play around with the angle until you find one that you really like (i.e. pointing down, up, or sideways) like this:

    Peeling

  4. Most pocket point-n-clicks don't have a great zoom lens, but you can get some hot close-ups.  Play around with distance by using the auto-focus, which is, of course, your best friend. Continually get closer and closer to your object, moving the camera slightly and pushing halfway down to auto focus until you've captured a big photo of a small object. Like this:

    Yellow

Now that you've taken your photos, I have a trick for you.  After you've downloaded your photos onto your computer, import them into Picasa.

View a photo by double clicking on it and click "I'm Feeling Lucky".  If you like how your photo changed, then you're all done.  If you don't like how it changed, then click "Undo I'm Feeling Lucky" to go back to the original photo.  This trick doesn't always work (especially if there are people in your photo), but more often than not this simple edit will polish up your photo and make you look like a better photographer in the process!

If I can do it, you certainly can too.  Now get out there and play with your camera!
