Save $ as well as trees.  Make it a 2-for-1 and stop by during story-time.

Print double side

Give single sided printed paper to your kids to use for scrap paper or use the other side when printing things like directions to your local consignment store.  When high quality does not matter, print in draft.  Only print in color when you really need color. Copy double sided too

Turn the water off when brushing teeth

When it’s time to rinse, turn the water on low. You would be surprised at how little water you really need. You may also want to try natural toothpaste.

Find alternatives to buying new

Before you buy an item new see if a friend or family member has one you can borrow (especially good for Halloween Costumes).  See if you can rent the item or buy it used (Craigslist, E-bay, Goodwill, or consignment stores)

Buy frozen juice in recyclable containers

Frozen juice is less expensive and uses less plastic and resources to make.   Have a pitcher of 100% juice always made up in your refrigerator for when the kids chime “I’m thirsty!”

  1. These are great tips… one I have to argue with though- I thought the same about orange juice cartons vs frozen cans until I read this Slate article that actually talks about just that. It comes to the conclusion "Not-from-concentrate orange juice sold by the carton comes out slightly ahead of frozen OJ sold by the canister in terms of energy use." Even with that knowledge, I like having the juice on hand all the time, so I buy the frozen cans anyway.

  2. Thank you for the link to the article Carton vs Canister. It was very informative and took into account things that other articles I have read had not. There is so much to learn about how to live a greener life. I appreciate your feed-back.
