This is the first part in a series that will cover the anatomy of a design project.
I am going to outline the series of steps I took, the decisions that were made, problems that were encountered and the final results. The project that I have chosen is a complete bedroom design for three little girls.
I hope you will read on even if you are not planning a similar endeavor. Many design projects share common anatomy.
The Clients: The family consists of mom and dad and three girls–ages 1, 3 and 5. Two of the girls are currently sleeping in the make-over room in a double bed. The youngest girl is almost 2 and would like to join her sisters in a "big girl" room.
The Project: After much discussion, it was decided that the project room would be made into a place for the three girls to sleep. The current nursery would be transitioned into a play room for the girls.
The room is a blank slate. It currently has white walls and wood floors.
1. Three separate mattresses so each child would have their own bed.
2. A place for reading.
3. A way of personalizing each girl's space.
4. A room that would bridge the age gap.
5. The style had to be appropriate for the girls as they grow.
6. Incorporation of recent professional photographs taken of the girls.
The floor plan:
The room is a relatively large area with lots of angles. The closet is a walk-in with extra space. This is important since it was decided to not have a dresser outside in the main living space. All the girls' clothes will be stored in the closet.
My initial ideas:
I wanted to create a funky, girly space centered around the amazing photographs of the girls. I really felt like it needed to be a room that they could use for years without modification. I wanted it to have clean lines with a modern feel but maintain some traditional elements so that it would flow with the rest of the house. Because bedtime stories were important to the family, I wanted to incorporate some sort of couch or daybed. I thought using all the shades of pink with brown accents would be perfect.
Next week: Planning and Timeline
I live at June Cleaver Nirvana where the color pink is regularly mocked by my three young boys.

Shades of pink and brown sound heavenly. I think it will give a great feel to the room. Girly but hip all at the same time.
Oh, I just love pink and brown! I've been strongly considering doing my girls' room in those colors. Can't wait to see more!
