A Step By Step Guide To Cleaning Out Your Closet

fashion and style A Step By Step Guide To Cleaning Out Your Closet

It happens four times a year. The seasons change, the weather changes and so should your closet. This is the perfect time to take stock of what you have, part with those items you never wear, and stop kidding yourself about what does and doesn’t fit. Here is a step by step guide to cleaning out your closet.

  • Take everything out: If you try and assess your closet “as is” you are more likely to hold onto things you shouldn’t. When everything is out of the closet, you will be more likely to be realistic about what you are working with.
  • Start three piles: Keep, repair (minor problems that are easily fixable), and donate/sell
  • Try everything on: You need to stand in front of a full length mirror and check how things really fit. If you have a trusted friend, this would be a good time to solicit their honest advice. No more holding onto things that you hope you might fit into someday. If it doesn’t fit it gets donated. We are practicing tough love here.
  • Think about the last time you wore something: If you haven’t worn it in the past year, you probably aren’t going to this year either. Or maybe you have discovered a long lost treasure that got buried in the back of the closet.

Put everything back in place and you should have an idea of what pieces you need to round out your wardrobe. Replace any classic pieces that don’t fit or show too much wear and tear and add in a few trendy items. Then immediately send the donate pile on its way before you reconsider that pair of skinny jeans you have been trying to squeeze into all year.
