All Work And No Play Equals A Stressed-Out Mama

I think all women, especially mothers, are guilty of not taking time out for themselves.

This past Saturday night I was invited by my fellow Nashville blogger Malia to a girls night out. Four of us met for dinner and fun martinis and then we enjoyed some leisurely time shopping, sampling new makeup, drooling at Pottery Barn (or maybe that was just me), and sipping on coffee. I felt a little guilty about leaving my husband home with our two girls, but I knew they would all be fine and he would take them out for a pizza date. In two weeks I'm heading to Memphis with my best friend. She and I made a pact last year that we would celebrate our birthdays every summer by going somewhere. Because she lives in the house of testosterone (she has three boys), it's a great chance for her to get away and revel in all things girly: shopping, talking, and maybe even a little spa time. For me it's a chance to escape the Disney Princess and My Little Pony infestation at our house and sleep in past 7 a.m.

One of my first supervisors when I started my career was a 40-year-old single mom. She is one of the funniest women I've ever met in my entire life. Working with her was pure joy. I'll never forget the time I called in "sick" and she saw right through my lame fake sick telephone voice and called me out on it. Instead of being angry with me, she understood my need to take a mental health day. She used to tell me, "Everyone needs to call in pretty day."

I'm not advocating calling in "pretty day" and skipping out on work, but I am advocating taking a mental health break.

Health Magazine's website has a wonderful article about making time to play, whether it be rediscovering a crafty hobby or passion from childhood, like dance, or joining a book club or hiking group.

So when was the last time you took time out to play?

I used to feel that way but then I got to thinkin'. My man leaves for work. He gets to get away from the house & kids, interact with other adults, and sometimes even eat in town.

Remember, he is their father;) And having some you time will only make you a better mother.

Yes, that was some "me" time I desperately needed! And I think I got some "pretty" time too with the new make-up that I, uh, scored. ;)

I'm sure you'll have a great time on your trip. That's a great idea. I have a friend whose birthday is two days before mine and the last few years we've done a double date with her & her husband to celebrate our birthdays together.

Will you see the new Twilight movie New Moon on Friday?
