Are you addicted to specialty coffees?

My name is Lena and I am addicted to Starbucks; specifically their Tall, Non-fat, 2 Pump, Vanilla Lattes.

They say that the first step is admitting you have a problem. I admit it; I have a problem.

I use to have a HUGE problem but thanks to the intervention from a good friend of mine I now have just a small problem.

Every day on my way into work I would stop at Starbucks for a tall raspberry mocha.

Starbucks Mocha

One morning my friend handed me a piece of paper that said:

  • 290 Calories = 75,400 calories a year
  • 15 Fat g = 3,900 fat grams a year
  • 260 cups, straws, & drink holders a year
  • $819 a year

These were the eye opening stats of my problem.

I loved my Starbucks way too much to quit cold turkey but I did change my ways.

Starbucks Latte

  • I switched to Tall, Non-fat, 2 Pump, Vanilla Lattes (normally the baristas use 3 pumps)
  • I now stop once (sometimes twice) a week
  • I take my own travel mug

My new coffee habit stats are:

(Based on 1.5 above mentioned lattes a week minus 10¢ for using my own travel mug)

  • 130 Calories = 10,140 calories a year (Savings: 65,260 calories a year)
  • 0 Fat g = 0 Fat grams a year  (Savings: 3, 900 Fat grams a year)
  • 0 cups, straws, & drink holders a year (Savings: 260 cups, straws, & drink holders not entering the landfill)
  • $238 a year  (Savings: $581 a year)
  • Bonus: I lost 5 pounds!

Those stats are much easier to live with.

If you are addicted to Starbucks specialty coffees like I am, you can go on-line and find the nutritional info for the coffee you drink. You may be surprised by what you find.

  1. WOW those stats make me quiver! especially the $819 one if my hubby knew I spent that much on coffee he would kick my butt! I guess our coffee habit is like that of a smokers! Maybe I need to find a way to cut down my prices on my other love STARBUCKS

  2. Hi. My name is Dawn. And I'm addicted to foofy coffee drinks. Starbucks foofy coffee drinks in particular. They're never the same anywhere else. The name of the monkey on my back is Hazelnut Latte. Venti Hazelnut Latte. Venti, because I figure if I'm going to spend the money, for a few cents more, I can get the big one. Hot or Iced, I do not care. My monkey has found a friend and invited him along for the occasional ride, his name is Toffee Nut Latte. They must be relatives since they have the same last name. During the holidays, Hazelnut and Toffee Nut get together with other relatives and I often have a third or fourth monkey to carry around, their names are Pumkin Spice and Peppermint Mocha. But it's the holidays, who can begrudge? Luckily (I think), I have an enabler. My mom has supplied me with a generous Starbucks gift card. Because of my fear of quickly depleting my balance, and probably because I'm just cheap, I've started picking up full size bottles of syrup and making my foofy drinks at home. For six dollars and change, I get a whole bottle of syrup that makes months worth of foofy drinks, versus four dollars and change for one drink

  3. My daughter gave me my first Starbucks gift card that was my downfall. I would stop EVERYDAY on my way to work. The card was empty so I refilled it. Then I started taking a new route to work, no Starbucks on the way. I now have a friend at work who stops on occasion. Maybe once a month now. So not too bad, but boy do I miss my Venti White Mocha Latte. I bring my own mug to work (44 oz) so I make do with that. Still good but not the same.

  4. Great article!
