Art for Home Decor: You Can Do It Yourself! Part 1

Okay ladies, it is time to make art.  Don't get nervous thinking "I am not the crafty type" this is a home decorating project not arts and craft time.  Really it wont take long and you will feel so "artsy" when it is over.

The projects pictured are from a recent project I did for a school library.  They are huge–4'x5'..there was a lot of room to cover so I did some large color blocks and some collages.  These look great for a playroom but this is a project that easily translates for any room in your house.. over the mantle, a bathroom, over the sofa, really anywhere…

1.  Identify a spot where you need a piece of
artwork..Do you  need something large or small?  colors?  Do you
want certain colors?  Do you have certain materials you would like to use
(book pages, certain letters?)

2. Purchase supplies:  canvas, acrylic craft
paints, foam brushes, Mod Podge, scrapbook paper, a plastic wallpaper scraper,
and/or fabric.  Consider incorporating large letters available at craft
stores.

3. Decide if your project needs a base coat of paint,
remember to do the edges!

4. Once the base coat is dry, next brush a light
layer of Mod Podge over the entire surface of the canvas (unless it is really
large and then you will need to work in sections) the Mod Podge will
"bubble" most scrap paper, fabric smooths easier, so keep this in mind.
Use the wallpaper scraper (or a similar item) to smooth  the paper and
prevent bubbles.  But remember, this project is not about PERFECTION, it
is about character and style.  In fact, the Mod Podge "bubbles"
and texture often  make the piece look more aged and interesting.

5. Once you have "glued down" the paper or fabric,
then go over the top with another thin layer of Mod Podge..add as many elements
as you wish. If you are using various different textures, you might need to
glue down stubborn edges with super glue type glue..Mod Podge might not be
strong enough for certain materials.

6. Finish/seal the project with a final layer of Mod Podge..remember to get matte finish so it does not shine! Consider
"striping" the sides with a 1" or less brush with black or
brown paint.

7.
Dont forget to sign you name on the back (where it is not sealed, you cant sign
your name over the various layers of Mod Podge)…you could also add a favorite
scripture or date with a sharpie pen.

Holly Mathis talks about Mod Podge and other insanely interesting topics on her blog http://www.hollymathisinteriors.com/ .
