I picked up this book at our local library.
Off Go Their Engines, Off Go Their Lights, written by Janice Milusich and illustrated by David Gordon.
My 3.5 year old loves anything involving vehicles, so I knew that this one would catch his eye.
This is a perfect bedtime story that tells of a taxi going on his last fare through the city at the end of the busy day.
We are taken on a ride through the sleepy city, saying good night to all of the other vehicles going to their various garages and parking lots for the night.
The illustrations are beautiful, and David Gordon catches twilight colors skillfully.
It's not obvious about it, but the writer identifies the various vehicles by color, thereby adding a little learning element to the bedtime tale. Here's an excerpt of my son's favorite page:
"Off goes its engine. Click. Off go its lights.
Good night,
red pumper truck,
good night."
Amazon.com lists this book as appropriate for ages 4-8, but a younger child will be interested in the pictures and the story as well.
I give this book five teddy bears.
