I am one of those blessed women who found a doctor who let her try a VBAC after 2 previous C-sections. My doctor was nervous, understandably, but we all agreed that I was an excellent candidate to try. I hired a doula to help keep me focused, to give me another voice to listen to, and to take some of the pressure off my husband. Everything went well and I had a successful vbac. I am expecting my 5th any day now and hope to repeat a vbac again.

I just successfully had my second by VBAC and I am SOOOOO thankful! The recovery was so fast compared to my c-section!
But...it's AMAZING to me the number of people who have said, "I didn't know they did that anymore" or "my Dr. said they don't do that anymore".
Thanks for helping to get rid of that misnomer and give women the power to make an informed choice!

As a labor and delivery nurse, for over 13 years, I was curious about your post. You did a good job with your research. Women just need to remember, that complications CAN occur with VBACs. Complications, such a a uterine rupture, can occur. A uterine rupturing, while you are in labor, becomes a life and death situation for the mother and the baby. I know that women want to be in control of their labor. Just as this post states, it is VERY important for you to be communicate with your OB healthcare provider. Open communication will help everyone be on the same page.

I totally agree with this, I had a wonderful doctor who told me flat out that most doctors won't allow VBAC's because they have to be there the entirety of the labor in case of an emergency and dr's don't enjoy doing that. Luckily she didn't have a problem with that and allowed me to try!

I think women need to remember that this is their body and if there are no imposing risks they should go for it if that's what they want!

Great article!

I had a classical incision with my first kiddo. From bellybutton to hair line. And on the uterus it was a horizontal cut. So, I had a big + cut. He took 6 people to push out of me. He was huge kid, 11 lbs 3oz. I was pregnant again relatively close to my first child, and wanted to try and have a regular birth. I tried everything. 2 weeks late, they tried everything from gel, to drip, even to seaweed rod to try and open my cervix. I only dilated 2cm before they popped my water. I had contractions, but the kiddo wouldn't come out. So, I ended up having an emergency c-section. I was only 20 and didn't know that it was bad to have a natural birth after a c-section.

I just want to say that a classical incision does not automatically mean you will not be able to find a doctor not open to the idea of a VBAC. My first child was a c-section with a classical incision. All 4 children born after him were all been VBAC. My doctor felt with the first pregnancy after that there was no reason not to try (and that was with twins). All my VBACs were successful, even w/ the classical incision....even the last one ,who was born at home during an unassisted birth.
