Debunking a Decorating Myth

100_6477

I'm sure you have heard this statement before:

Buy what you love for your home,
and it will all fall into place.

Don't hate me, but I'm here to tell you that is a myth. I think it is a lie someone started to make us feel good about buying more stuff.

I have clients who call me all the time frustrated because they bought into the myth. They buy what
they love, bring it home, set it in the room and then are confused and disappointed
because it doesn't work. Things don't just "fall into place." They've overspent and are drowning in things that end up in a closet or look utterly wrong in the room.

Ancient decorating maxim:
A room full of eye candy can give you a tummy ache.

Don't shoot the messenger. It's true.

Today's tip: Decorating a room is like putting together a puzzle.
Each piece of the puzzle is important to the end result, but not necessarily because you adore each piece all by itself. In other words, each piece of the decorating puzzle doesn't have to be amazing, perfect, outrageously beautiful or absolutely your favorite to contribute to a successful room.

From time to time in upcoming Blissfully Domestic articles, I will be sharing bits & pieces of the Decorating Puzzle. By thinking of our rooms as a puzzle rather than a collection of individual things, we are able to work with what we have, know what we need in the room and thus save money when we do need to buy things. And our rooms will still look lovely, even without 50% more eye candy. I promise. I wouldn't lie to you.

Need proof? Stay tuned here at Blissfully Domestic where I will share pieces of the Decorating Puzzle.

  1. You're so right! It could be compared to when ladies where all of their rings on one hand. The rings by themsleves might be pretty, but the rings (all 15 of them maybe) all together just looks messy and sad. Great post!

  2. This is exactly what I've thought for ages now! I used to believe it a long time ago but found out that it doesn't really work. Can't wait to read your series on this!

  3. Thanks Melissa! Great one!

Which Halloween candy will you "confiscate" from your children?
