Decorating children's rooms with favorite picture books

Madeleine

As I approach the due date of my second darling daughter, visions of pink, paisley and fluffy swirl around inside my head.  However, while perusing ideas on the Web and in magazines, I couldn’t help but be taken back to when I was a Kindergarten teacher, reminiscing over how I decorated and designed my classroom.

One of my favorite ways to decorate was using children’s literature. So colorful, beautiful and whimsical, illustrations from beloved children’s books can be the perfect way to uniquely and inexpensively create a fantastic bedroom or nursery for your child. There are many terrific books available from libraries, bookstores, consignment shops, friends and even your little one’s own collection. After all, if you have a Click Clack Moo fan in your house, wouldn’t Betsy Lewin’s lively illustrations of quirky cows and pigs make your child’s space even more fun?

After choosing a favorite book or a selection of books to incorporate into your child’s room décor, simply color-copy or scan and print, frame and voila! You’ll have instant art and immediate smiles.

For some inspiration, here are a few of my favorite children’s books along with author and illustrator. Originally I was planning a Little Golden Book theme for my daughter’s big girl room at our new house, but her new found love of all things Madeline by Ludwig Bemelmans and his delightful illustrations of 1930s Paris have suddenly taken top decorating spot.
