Diary of a Fitness Flunky: Motivation? What's That?

I just finished a thirty minute Pilates workout video.  Sure I checked my email at the two breaks, but I checked really fast!

Success!

I am notorious for starting a workout and diet program and then suddenly one day completely dropping my newfound GOOD LIFESTYLE choices in f

avor of couch potatery and ice cream floats.  Before having kids, both my husband and I made a decision that we were going to lose weight.  Knowing we wanted to start a family soon, I was motivated to start a pregnancy at least a size 6 versus the size 12 I had "suddenly" become.  I did lose the weight, following a low carb diet and working out regularly.  The results were dramatic and I'd never been so proud of my appearance.

So why now, that I'm a size 12 again (and a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT size 12 than I was pre-baby), am I having such a hard time getting motivated?

I see the tire that's developed around my waist and feel the jiggles of my thighs as I climb the stairs in my house countless numbers of times a day.  The skin around my arms is getting too tight, or at least it looks that way with the odd old-lady wrinkling of my skin.  I should be motivated, but yet…I check my email while doing a measley 30 minute Pilates video???

This diary is going to be a very honest, often brutal look at what it's really like to achieve fitness goals (not that I actually have any real goals in mind.)  I hope you'll join me in my journey to achieving a different body, a healthier body, a body I'm less ashamed to pinch inside of a swimsuit.

  1. Good luck! That reminds me that I need to go to the gym this morning. Eek. Let's see if I can crawl away from my desk…

I completely understand where you're coming from! I've fallen off of the wagon myself. I was doing so well. The key is just to not quit!
It's great that you're starting over. Keep going, keep going! I'm behind ya! I know how hard it is!
    Hang in there!

  3. Good luck!
I tend to be a one day exercise person – I do the video once and then not again for a few months. Although, I've been very good in the last week – so that's good. I just have to keep it up.
But I totally get the part about checking e-mail during breaks! If the computer were closer to the TV, I would totally do it too LOL!

  4. this mythical motivation also escapes me! i have friends who run marathons… where does that discipline come from? and why don't i have it? i love the feeling of sore muscles after i do a pilates DVD… but i don't do the workout more than once. i'm totally rooting for you and hope you can inspire me too : )

  5. Ya know. We beat ourselves up thinking we fail at this because we lack motivation.

    I don't think that's the problem.

I think these new activities are not ingrained in our mind yet. They are not habits, like watching LOST or eat 3 meals a day.

Set up some kind of system to remind you do some exercise. Put it on your calendar and treat it like a doctor's appointment (show up late, but show up). Give it time. Atleast a month, probably 3. Then see if you lack motivation…

Wow you all! I really appreciate all this encouragment! Maybe I really might actually get somewhere with this whole fitness regime this time!

What is your breakfast style?
