This summer we re-landscaped our front yard. Every evening after work we would head outside to work on the yard till dark and every morning we would wake up to find the same thing; the dirt dug up and fresh cat poo in the holes. It was driving us crazy, especially since we don’t own cats.
I jumped on-line to see what I could find on humane ways to rid our yard of cat poo (before my husband resorted to some not so humane ways). I found this helpful article from the San Francisco SPCA.
The one hint that quickly caught my eye was “Scatter coffee grounds or pipe tobacco in the area”
Although I did not have pipe tobacco, I certainly had coffee grounds. And lots of them!
I started saving my coffee grounds (which I should have already been doing for composting reasons but that is another story) and hubby started spreading them in our “problem” areas. It seemed to being doing the trick. The cat poo was not showing up in the coffee ground covered areas.
The problem now was getting enough coffee grounds to cover the whole area. I tried to do my best but I can only drink so much coffee (for the health of my bladder and the sanity of those around me) so the process was slow going.
Then during my weekly trip to Starbucks to get my Vanilla Latte fix I noticed a bucket filled with coffee bags with a sign that said, “Free. For your garden.”
They were giving away bags of their used coffee grounds!
How could I have not known about this before now? Now I can get my weekly latte fix and pick up a couple bags of kitty-poo-be-gone at the same time. Sounds like a win-win situation to me!
A quick Google search will link you to other uses that people have found for coffee grounds (from face masks to composting from ant repellent to drain cleaner from plant fertilizer to deodorizers).
Who knew that there were so many things to do with used coffee grounds!
