I know this economy has been tough and everyone is belt tightening–especially those of us who have little mouths to feed. However, this in no way means you have to scrimp on spa treatments–taking time for yourself is more important now due to increased stress. When you can't pay top dollar to go to the spa, then bring the spa to you.
Epsom Salt is a versatile product that does wonders for the skin. It is easy to use, easy to afford and easy to find. A soak in Epsom Salt restores vital magnesium levels in the body, reduces stress and leaves skin radiant and glowing.
To exfoliate: Mix 2 cups of Epsom Salt with 1/4 cup of petroleum jelly and a few drops of lavender essential oil. Use the mixture to gently scrub away dry skin patches.
Facial: Mix 1/2 TSP of Epsom Salt into cleansing cream for a deep-pore cleansing. Massage on skin. Rinse with cool water. Pat dry.
For a relaxing soak: Add two cups of Epsom Salt to the water in a standard-sized bathtub; soak for at least 12 minutes, three times weekly. For an extra treat, add a few drops of eucalyptus oil for a refreshing scent.
Homemade bath crystals: Mix two cups of Epsom Salt with a few drops of fragrance to create a custom bath crystal. Add a few drops of food coloring or 1/2 TSP of glycerin if you like. Store in an air-tight container.
Epsom Salt and Stress
Scientific studies have shown that magnesium, the primary component of Epsom Salt, performs more functions in the human body than almost any other mineral. Plus, magnesium is easily absorbed through the skin, which means reducing stress and improving health is as easy as relaxing in the tub. Excess adrenaline and stress are believed to drain the body of magnesium, a natural stress reliever and the main component of Epsom Salt. The body requires magnesium to bind adequate amounts of serotonin, a mood-elevating chemical within the brain that creates a feeling of well being and relaxation. Restoring magnesium levels also improves sleep, reduces anxiety and relieves muscle aches, all common ailments during the holiday season.
