Frugal ways to save money on food at Disney

Going on a Disney vacation can often break the bank, but if planned correctly you can save money and still have great family fun. Food at Disney is one of the biggest expenses so this is where you want to begin your budgeting.

Eat In:

  • If your hotel has a kitchen make use of it. Yes, you're on vacation, so no slaving over the stove. Keep snacks, cereals, lunch meat, milk, juices, sodas and lots of bottled water. Don't forget frozen meals or ready made dinners from the grocery store.
  • Make use of your kitchen for breakfasts in your room. PB&J and lunch meat sandwiches are just fine too.  Bring lunches, snacks and cold water bottles into the parks.

Eat Out:

  • At the parks, chose to eat lunches instead of dinners. Lunch is less expensive. Choose a buffet meal, especially a character one. You'll fill up enough to skip a meal or just want a snack. Character meals are a combination of an activity as well as food. Bring your camera and autograph books. Spend a lot of time and enjoy!
  • Choose counter meals instead of full service meals. There's no need to order a combo meal. You'll save money by ordering just a burger for your two children, cutting it in half and giving them the snacks and water you brought. Tacky? No one watches what you're doing once you sit down to eat, promise!
  • Check to see if one of the Disney Dining Plans are right for your family. To take part in these you must be staying on Disney property. Look over the fine print to see what's included, where you can eat and if tips are included.
  • Choose one or two days to splurge. There are some restaurants or theme dining experiences that are important to you. By saving money you can afford to do these. You can also plan on another trip to Disney with the money you've saved!

Head on over to the forum to share your tips, ideas or questions about disney!

  1. Talk about timing! My mom called me at lunch to tell me she wants to take the family to DisneyLand for Spring Break. I'll be bookmarking this as a reminder/budget saver.

Will you see the new Twilight movie New Moon on Friday?
