I know I’ve said it before, and who knows how many more times I will have to say this very thing this season but: DENNY, YOU ARE DEAD. GO AWAY. The Dead Denny storyline, and Denny following Izzie around everywhere has really overrun its course and is now so far into “jump the shark” territory that I am hoping against all hope that the writers of Grey’s have some big fantastic trick up their creative sleeves to explain this and keep us all around next season.
Onward.
This episode focused around the moment the residents had been waiting for: to see who would get to
perform the first solo surgery (a below the knee bone amputation). The unanimous choice was Dr. Yang, but with the antics of those whacky self-mutilating interns have taken Yang out of the running so Yang was tasked to choose one of her peers to perform the surgery. The winner would then get to pick a fellow resident to operate with them, seeing as how those same pesky interns were banned from the OR.
In addition, Dr. Dixon was back and Seattle Grace was given another chance to impress her. The Chief put Yang in charge of spending the day with her, telling her he’d know who to blame if Dixon declined the post at SGH.
Into the ER came two sisters – one 15 years old, one 16. Joyriding in their dad’s car, they crashed and came in fighting. They were screeching at each other until Karev noted something unusal in Holly’s eyes, and quickly got her to Shepherd for evaluation. She was almost immediately whisked into surgery. As they wheeled Holly away, the last words yelled to her by her sister Emma were: “I hope you die!” (You know that’s not going to go well).
Sloan’s cool surgery of the week was performing an operation on a woman to restore her voice. She had taken to communicating via Post It notes and it was obviously a huge drain on her life and marriage. Post surgery, Kathleen was reluctant to try to speak again – fearing that the surgery was not successful. Her husband was angered and left. Lexie returned later to encourage Kathleen to try – and was thrilled when Kathleen was able to say “hi”. Success!
In the midst of Yang walking around with Dixon, the other residents were trying to sell themselves to Christina and telling her that they were the best choice for the surgery win. Dixon seemed to be analyzing Yang – and the whole picking the winner process.
The surgery on Holly was less than successful, and Dixon was the one to bluntly break the news to Holly’s
family that Holly was now braindead and that the family should donate organs ASAP. Meredith finally requested that Dixon leave. This storyline broke my heart this week – boy, that mom part of me gets so squidgy when things happen to kids on this show! I hate it!!
Dr. Dixon then encouraged Yang to leave “feelings out of it” when selecting the solo-surgeon, which caused Yang to make her choice: Karev. Karev was the only one to not kiss up to Christina, but rather, he presented to her what the surgery would entail. Thrilled by his win, Alex sought out Izzie in the on call room (she obviously thought she was with Denny). He told her he loves her and then selected her to scrub in with him. I kind of like this side of Alex – but wish that Izzie wasn’t turning into such a whackjob.
In the viewing room watching the surgery, Yang was very upset about not being able to do the surgery and stormed out – prompting Hunt to chase her down, take her to some steam room, stand her over a vent and let the air just rush the frustration right out of her. Admittedly, it was kind of cool to hear Christina laugh like that, but there must be a writer’s rule: Hunt and Yang can kiss in each episode, provided they wait until the last five minutes.
What did you think of last night’s episode? What is the deal with Dixon? The Sloan/Lexie hookup – did that bother you? Callie going ga-ga over Sadie – yea or nay?

Well, Dixon has Asperger's so there ya go. I think the actress is doing really well with the character but I read she was only signed on for 3 episodes. Not sure if they changed that or not. Overall I think it is one of the more interesting plot lines and I applaud the writers for that decision.
The Denny/Izzy thing? They're smoking crack. Denny isn't even acting like himself, or rather the himself he was when he was alive. The whole thing just bugs me.
Did you catch that Sloan's patient was a blogger? I thought it was interesting but not really a very good portrayal, Oh well, maybe the whole not looking away from the computer when answering a question albeit with post its hit a little too close to home.
I am really loving Sloan's character this season. The whole Focus your passion into your work line was great.
Katie – I missed that Dixon has Asperger's, which I'm not very familiar with. From what i just read on another site, they say the actress is doing a very credible job in the portrayal.
I just read a spoiler on the Denny/Izzie thing. I'm not sure if it helps me feel any better about this direction…
The Izzy/Denny story line is getting old already!! BUT, I think there may be a change when Karev told Izzy he loves her. It seemed to really to impress Izzy…sooooo, hopefully that's the clue to a change of story line.
My husband and I have a theory that Izzy's got a brain tumor. I agree – pretty close to shark territory. Other than that, it was one of the first episodes that left me wanting more this season. I am anxious for next episode.
