For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and His ears are open to their prayers…" 1 Peter 3:12 NIV
Hagar's story is one of courage and endurance in times of rejection and despair. Her life was hard, yet during her darkest days the God Who Sees saw her need and the God Who Hears heard her cry.
Hagar, a slave woman serving her mistress Sarah, was given to Sarah's husband Abraham in hopes that she would bear a child for the couple. Hagar become with child and thus begins a period of turmoil in the tent. As a result of the dire situation, Hagar flees to the desert.
Have you reached a point in your life where you feel running away is your only solution?
In the desert Hagar is visited by the Angel of the Lord. He calls her by name, "Hagar, where have you come from, where are you going?" Gen. 16:7 NIV. God saw Hagar and knew that her safety and the safety of her unborn child were at risk. God did not deny the validity of Hagar's pain nor did He promise all would be okay. He directed her to return to her circumstances.
God does not promise to eliminate our burdens but provides sufficient grace to match our needs. He gives us exactly what we need, nothing more, nothing less.
God promised Hagar that He would increase her descendants, that they would be too numerous to count. Hagar's willingness to obey God provided God an opportunity to pour out His gracious blessings.
Are you allowing God to direct you back to the place of HIS protection and blessing-regardless of the circumstances?
Abraham and Hagar's son is born and his name is Ishmael (God Hears). He is the apple of his fathers eye, the heir apparent and all is well UNTIL 14 years later when Isaac is born to Sarah and Abraham. The tent becomes a place of turmoil yet again. Sarah wants Hagar and Ishmael turned away. Hagar again enters the desert-banished instead of fleeing.
Hagar, banished with her child, grew desperate in her plight. Water and food are gone, her child lay dying in the desert. In what she probably believed were her last moments in life she cries out in anguish and her God hears. Again the Angel of the Lord appears to Hagar- "What's wrong Hagar? Don't be afraid…" Gen 21:17 The Message. God took care of her need. He saw and heard her desperation and provided salvation in the form of a well of water.
How precious is it that God sees and hears us in our deepest moments of desperation. He provides comfort and promise in our times of need. He provided our salvation in the form of a well full of LOVE-Christ Jesus on the Cross!
