HBO's "True Blood" is More Than a Vampire Tale

entertainment HBOs True Blood is More Than a Vampire Tale

As my fellow BD contributor Jill pointed out, Vampires are "Hot". I have to confess that I am totally WEENIE when it comes to things creepy and frightful.  Unlike my husband and daughters, I don't like Halloween.  I couldn't even ride the spooky ride at Legoland…when I was 39!

You get the picture.  I'm not your average scary book/scary movie loving type of gal.  But I love the new series on HBO, True Blood. The series is based on the "Southern Vampire" books by Charlaine Harris The show is less about the vampires and more about the dysfunctional, funny and sad interactions between the people in the story.  Note for all you "weenies" out there: "True Blood" contains violence, sexual content, similar to "The Sopranos". So it's for watching POST kiddos bedtime.  Tivo the series so you can fast forward through the scary parts…like me!

I want to read the books by Charlaine Harris but haven't started.  In an interview with the author, she says the vampires in her stories are a metaphor for other groups in our society who are viewed as "monsters".   "True Blood" is a vampire/love story/current events story/dark comedy.  Even if you are scared of the kiddie roller coaster at the amusement park (true story, just ask my family) you might like "True Blood".

I'm very excited about this series – Terry Gross had a great interview with the creator, Alan Ball, on the Sept. 10th "Fresh Air" – you can listen to it online if you're interested.

  2. I'm planning on reading this series of books after viewing the show on HBO. I love Alan Ball, formerly of Six Feet Under. He can do no wrong! :)

I have enjoyed the first couple episodes, the second more than the first. First episodes of new series are always kind of hard because they have SOOOOO much to introduce.

I need some new reading material so I've been thinking I'll pick up the series. I wanted to test out the eReader for iPhone anyway and the books are fairly inexpensive for that platform!

I'm glad Robin mentioned the NPR interview with the show's creator. It was kind of interesting to hear his perspectives on the characters.

I had considered writing recaps of the series for BD, but after someone got upset over my recap of Kitchen Nightmares, I'm a little scared to write them now!

  4. I read the first book in the series because the author also graduated from my alma mater, Rhodes College. I'll be honest, I thought the book was really terrible. I even tried to start book 2 but gave up 30 pages in because it was so bad. I'm sure HBO will glam it up so that it is really fun to watch, but as for the books….yikes. I suppose I should admit that I've never been a big fan of mystery books in the first place.
Nevertheless, I'm proud for Ms. Harris for making it big with HBO! Way to go!

Will you see the new Twilight movie New Moon on Friday?
