Let's Play the Name Game

Names Of God

Thanks to Wordle.net for creating this graphic.

Have you ever noticed throughout the Bible, how many names are used to identify God? Jehovah, I AM, the Alpha and Omega, YHWH. Jesus is the Son of God, the Son of Man, the Messiah, Emmanuel. This song talks about some of Jesus' names.

faith Lets Play the Name Game

In Genesis, Jacob wrestles with God and is given a new name, Israel, because he struggled with God. He wouldn't give up until God agreed to bless him — which God did by changing Jacob's name.

Names were much more important in Biblical times. Your name was much more than what someone yelled at you to get your attention; it was the essence of your being. That's why your name might change after an important life event.

What is your name? Not the name that your parents gave you, but the name given to you by God. What does God call you? Has your name changed over your life? Are you working toward a different name?

There is a name that sums up the essence of you. What is it?

If you could choose your God-name, what would it be?

  1. I've always been fascinated by the names in the Bible – I love looking up the meanings given to places and people. If I could choose my God-name, I think I would choose "Faithful." I'm pretty sure I don't live up to it most of the time, but I strive towards it anyway.

Names are definitely a fascination for me as well. For our children we choose "Praise" and "Wisdom" and have prayed that God will fulfill those attributes in their characters as they grow and mature. Names can be very powerful in a person's life.

I think I would choose "Daughter" as my God-name, for many personal reasons…

  3. Amber

Oh, wow, that's a tough question. Good food for thought today! I'm sure the name that God calls me has changed several times, and it probably will again in the future. I'd like to think right now God could call me "a woman after his own heart" since that has been something I've been striving for in recent months. But I know, at the same time, I often don't live up to that.

  4. I'd guess God would name me Rebellious.

I know Amber said it, but I was thinking it as I read this, so I'll say it again. Some serious food for thought here. I too have always been fascinated with names, but have never given the idea of what my God-name would be much thought. I think at this point in my life my God-name would be "Student", because right now, I'm all about learning and taking in the lessons I'm being taught.
