Miraculous Mantle Makeover

If you are lucky enough to have a fireplace and a mantle it can be overwhelming to decide what to do with it. There are truly thousands of beautiful ways to create a warm, inviting look for your mantle. Here's one idea and keep in mind, I am all about the quick, the easy and the thrifty when it comes to some aspects of decorating!

My favorite mantle solution is simply shutters!  Yes, shutters!  These plastic red ones are from the Habitat for Humanity Restore and cost me a full seven dollars. I usually leave them all by their lonesome.  I love the texture and color.  They flood the builder beige walls of my rental home with much needed color.  If you are the daring type, after you get your shutters and hang them or lean them against your wall, the real fun begins!

You can just leave them plain or, go for the layered look…

*Hang a wreath in the center
*Line up large neutral candles of different heights
* Place two buffet lamps on the sides
*Hang framed pictures right on top of them—don’t be afraid to nail right through them!
*What about that old vase you have laying around, you could fill it with sticks from your    yard
{Yes, I said sticks from your yard–don’t knock it until you’ve tried it.}
*Hang a piece of ironwork over them
*Hang your monogram in wooden letters over them {make sure to make the middle one larger}

Don’t let that mantle get the best of you and remember, it doesn’t have to be perfect to be beautiful!

  1. That's such a cute idea. I may have to try that in the playroom. The walls are bright white and that would really add a punch of color!

    I love the way you describe the shutters as "flooding the builder beige walls with color."

    That's exactly what they do! And the scale is so perfect for newer homes with vaulted ceilings.

    I absolutely positively love that look. And I would do it in a heartbeat except my husband and I bought an expensive piece of art pre-kid. He wants that over the mantle because it makes his life feel right. I still need to spice it up though. I want shutters!

    I actually have a print of a sunflower on our mantle. It's from Big Lots. Shhhhh…don't tell anyone. ;)
