"Mistakes" Can Be Your Photography Friend

"Some of your 'mistakes' make the best photos."

My photography professor told me this during what was otherwise a fairly miserable experience in his class. (I'm lucky I ever picked up a camera again. Just sayin'.) In this case, I was taking photos of a jungle gym. Somehow, I hit the shutter without realizing it. When I looked at the photos, I saw a blurry jungle gym. I thought the photo was dreadful. My professor saw a shot with lots of movement. Pretty soon, I saw the potential in that photo, too.

I took this photo under similar circumstances.

It's moss, but I hit the shutter too soon, so it has that surreal look going on. For better or for worse, I didn't crop it, PhotoShop it, nothing.

Here's another example.

Again, I hit he shutter without meaning to. Immediately I saw that if I cropped it, I could have a really cool shadow photo. I did, and voila!

In college I would never have considered doing anything with EITHER photo. But with my professor widening my horizons, now I look at my "mistakes" almost as hard as I look at my "winners."

Occasionally, I put down my camera. When I do, you can find me at Ramblings by Reba. There are lots of photos there, too. :)

I am married to my best friend. That sounds cheesy, but it's true. I love photography, reading, and napping (but not necessarily in that order).

  1. Awesome. Gives me hope that all my horrible photos are actually secretly cool.

Will you see the new Twilight movie New Moon on Friday?
