New Movie Release Tuesday

We are starting a new segment here at Blissful Buzz.  We know how high gas prices and a slow economy are causing a major cash crunch for a lot of people. Due to this cash crunch we have to give up some of the extras in life, like going to the movies.  So each Tuesday we are going to highlight some of the new Video/DVD releases and throw in some great homemade snacks to round off the night.

New Releases 08/12/2008:

entertainment New Movie Release Tuesday

Smart People is one of the new DVD's being released today.  The movie staring, Dennis Quaid, Sara Jessica Parker and Thomas Hayden Church, revolves around a professor, Quaid, and his inability to deal with his family.  He is a widower with a teenage daughter who seems to know everything, something I am sure a few of us can relate too.  His adopted brother, played by Church, seems to like his free loading lifestyle no matter how much strife it is causing.  The movie is rated R and runs for 93 minutes.

Nims Island was actually released on 08/05/2008 to DVD.  This is a wonderful children's movie about a young girl who lives on a remote island with her father.  The little girl is left to her own devices when her father's boat is out to sea.  A tourist group finds the island and wreaks havoc on her little Paradise.  The little girl realizes that she needs some assistance in saving her little taste of Paradise so she begins corresponding with an author of a book she has been reading.  The movie is a great tale of the strength and love of a little girl who is set out to save her island.  The movie is rated PG and runs for 95 minutes.

For a great treat to snack on while you are watching your movie try this idea out.  I found the most amazing recipe at Kaboose.

Gooey chocolate, crunchy peanuts and sweet corn syrup and butter make popcorn pop! Perfect for birthday parties and late-night snacks, these crispy, crunchy clusters are delightfully sweet and salty to satisfy every craving.

Ingredients

  • 12 cups (12 litres) plain popped popcorn (see below)
  • 3 cups (750 mL) peanuts — salted or unsalted
  • 1-3/4 cups (425 mL) semisweet chocolate chips
  • 1 cup (250 mL) corn syrup
  • 1/4 cup (50 mL) butter

Cooking Instructions

Preheat the oven to 300 degrees F (150 degrees C). Grease a large roasting pan. Line a large cookie sheet (or two smaller ones) with waxed paper.

Measure the popcorn and peanuts into the roasting pan. In a small saucepan, combine the chocolate chips, corn syrup and butter. Place over low heat and cook, stirring, until the mixture is smooth and just beginning to boil. Remove from heat and pour over the popcorn mixture, tossing to coat everything as evenly as possible.

Place in the oven and bake for 35 to 40 minutes, stirring every 10 minutes.

Remove from oven and dump popcorn mixture onto the waxed paper-lined cookie sheet. Let cool completely, then break into clumps to serve. Store leftovers (as if!) in an airtight container.

Servings: Makes about 12 cups (3 liters).

NOTE: This should be made with popcorn prepared either in a pan on the stove top or in a hot air popper. Don't add any additional flavoring or butter.

How kids can help: Older kids can combine and melt chocolate mixture on the stove. They can also help break up popcorn clumps when cool.

    Yummy. Thanks for the recipe.

  3. This segment has come at the perfect time for our family. Were thinking of down-grading our cable to the very basic channels and therefore relying on Netflix or Blockbuster for movies & entertainment.
