Outdoor Frugal Fun for kids

PhotobucketAny parent knows it can be difficult to find activities to entertain our kids without spending a ton of money. Here are some ideas for keeping your kids occupied, entertained and best of all, tiring them out – without spending a lot of money:

Slip n Slide -  instead of paying $12 for a morning at a local splash park, a slip n' slide costs about $10 and you can use it right in your backyard whenever you like. It helps get out energy, keeps the kids cool, and provides hours of priceless entertainment.

Bubbles -For 50 cents, a bottle of bubbles is great for entertainment not only in blowing the bubbles but chasing them too! Add this to other afternoon outdoor activities for a little break in action while still having fun.

Plant a Garden – Packets of flower seeds cost very little. Helping your little ones learn to plant them, take care of them and watch them grow is a classic outdoor pastime. And the value of teaching them the process of growing something so beautiful is priceless.Photobucket

  • Take a Hike – Visit your local or state parks and enjoy an afternoon of being one with nature by hiking through trails. This can also be a time to teach your kids about different elements of nature. There's nothing like taking a hike with kids to make everyone stop and smell the roses.

Fingerpaint -PhotobucketKids love to make a mess with paint, so eliminate the stress of watching over your valuable tables and floors inside and take it outside. A huge roll of paper and a set of paints costs a few dollars, but letting them get messy to their heart's content is priceless. Hose everything (and everyone!) off when they're done and wrap them in towels and cleanup is done!

Pack a Picnic Lunch - Something about spreading a blanket out on the soft grass and eating lunch that way is so exciting for little ones. We often don't even have to leave our yard to do this, but you can take it to a nearby park instead of your own yard. This instead of fast food out is a great way to get out but not spend the money at a restaurant and to still eat yummy homemade lunches.

Photobucket Go Fly a Kite- A homemade and packed picnic lunch at a park can be rounded out by bringing a kite along. Let them race around while you set up lunch and then they can fly the kite some more while you enjoy watching.

There are a lot more ideas for outdoor frugal fun. What are some of the things you like to do to get outside but not spend a lot of money? I'd love to hear more ideas in our forum!
