Last night’s finale set off to showcase the first time Project Runway featured three women in the finale. Kenley, Korto and Leanne (who showed in that order in the Bryant Park tents) showed some phenomenal looks to end the fifth season of Project Runway.
The designers were instructed to edit their collections – from twelve looks to ten. This proved difficult for all three designers and sent Korto in the direction of creating two new looks for her show. The days preceding Bryant Park were packed with last minute style details – model selection (I love that Leanne was looking for “alien-looking” models), L’Oreal Paris (HELLO! product placement!) makeup consultations, TreSemme hair consultations (I’m a marketing chick – I love the product placement, I really do. I get it).
In the midst of model fittings, Korto was stressed to the max creating her final two looks. Leanne’s model Tia brought her dog to her fitting – last night’s sole moment where I shook my head and thought, “REALLY?” Because that little doggy? He promptly pooped on the workroom floor. Gross.
The day of the Runway Show, the audience was packed. It was awesome to see former designers (Christian is still the fierce-est) and family members in the crowd. Heidi came into the spotlight to introduce Michael Kors, Nina Garcia and Tim Gunn as the special guest judge sitting in for Jennifer Lopez.
The designers introduced their collections and the models showed these amazing looks on the Bryant Park runway. After the show, they are taken back to meet with the judges. Heidi congratulated them for getting so far, and reminded them once again of all the loot the winner would score. After introducing judges Michael Kors and Nina Garcia, Heidi intro’d the guest judge oddly: “Really hot hottie Tim Gunn.”
Michael Kors felt Kenley’s collection was full of charm and personality and was impressed that Kenley had painted the fabric herself. Tim loved her concept and pointed out that Kenley had a profound point of view. However, like last week’s wedding dress, one of Kenley’s designs reminded Nina very much of a Balenciaga design.
Nina felt Korto’s collection looked effortlessly cohesive. Tim felt that Korto did an amazing job with her short dress. Heidi mentioned that some of Korto’s designs seemed overworked. Much as I adore Korto, I’d have to agree.
Michael Kors felt Leanne’s first look immediately set the tone for the rest of her collection. Nina loved how Leanne showed a wide range of her abilities – shorts, pants, skirts, jackets, and so forth. Michael felt nervous, however, that Leanne would be known as the “Queen of Petals”.
After the chat, the judges brought the designers back out. Kenley was out (honestly, I actually enjoyed her collection). Korto was auf’d as well, leaving Leanne as the winner of Project Runway, Season Five.

I was thrilled Leanne won.
Going into the finale, I was rooting for Korto, but Leanne just outdid herself with her line. It was beautiful and difference. I would absolutely buy that long turquoise dress.
Korto's line looked good, too, but some outfits seemed to repeat, to me.
I can't stand Kenley, but I did like her handpainted flowers. I just don't think her line looked cohesive. Some were nice separately, but not together. Also, not that this matters to the judges, but thought that flower on her head was ridiculous.
Also, thought it was odd to have Tim Gunn as a judge. Sure, I love him, but he's supposed to be the person coaching the designers. I thought that was odd. I'd rather they'd had a winner from a previous year be judge.
Throughout the season I was rooting for Korto – but last night, I didn't totally love ANYONE's collection in its entirety so I almost didn't care who won. (Isn't that sad?). I rooted hardcore for Daniel Vosovic. I felt that way about Christian last season. But I couldn't 100% fall in love with any of the three designers and their final collections.
Bloggingmom – I'm with you on the flower Kenley had on her noggin – seemed like more Dr Seuss, and less Alice in Wonderland.
And I hadn't thought of having a former designer as a judge but that would have been awesome – especially since they were all in the audience anyway. But, then again, I adore Tim Gunn and think that the fact that he got to finally get a little bit more spotlight time is awesome. He was actually overwhelmingly positive though – I was surprised.
