One thing that I think is important to remember for helping to keep your refrigerator cleaner is to always put things you are thawing on a plate or bowl. I had one time that I was thawing a roast in the refrigerator and am SO thankful I had it sitting in a bowl because the bowl ended up with blood/juices all in the bottom -- the package had leaked while thawing. Eeewwwww! If I had just had that sitting on a refrigerator shelf, not only would it have been a huge mess to clean up, it would have been seriously unsanitary!

If you use hot/warm water on the sponge while cleaning it gets off the stuck on food even easier. Especially if its spilled syrup in the bottom.

This is so funny--I just started in on the fridge today. I got the top shelf done, so far.
Here's another tip for you: use whole sections of the newspaper to line drawers in the fridge. The thickness helps absorb any water or meat juices and when you clean up next time, you just have to roll the thing up along with dead grapes and sad carrots.

good tips! it's often scary what i find lurking in the back of my fridge. i need to get better about regular cleaning.

might i suggest instead of throwing out outdated cans and bottles that you clean them out and then recycle them? :)
