Saving money on your pet.

I do love my dog Simba, but I don’t need to tell you that having a pet isn’t cheap. Sure, daily walks enable me to forgo a gym membership, and there is peace of mind knowing that Simba’s (loud) bark will keep away any intruder, but between food, check-ups and grooming, it can cost a small fortune to own a pet. So here are five ways to cut down on the costs of pet ownership.

1) Get Smart About Yearly Vaccinations- Educate yourself about the shots your pet requires. Many vets suggest a booster vaccination every year, but the American Animal Hospital Association now says many adult dogs need shots only once every three years.

2- Don’t Scrimp on Pet Food- As frugal as I am, I do buy the best dog food I can buy, which costs me around $45 a month. In seven years with us, Simba has never had a single health problem requiring a costly visit to the veterinarian, and I like to thank her healthy diet for the cost savings.

3- Groom Your Pet Regularly- Well-groomed pets tend to be healthy and parasite-free. Either cut your pet’s hair and nails yourself (you’ll find various how-to advice online or at your local library), or call around to compare grooming prices. Surprisingly, the best deal in my area is through Aussie Pet Mobile, a national full-service pet grooming franchise. I thought they would be the most expensive because they come to my home, but boy was I glad I called!

4- Head Online for Pet Medications- As with hair care products at the salon, you can get pet medications for a lot less anywhere but your vet’s office. I’d been buying heart worm prevention medicine from my vet for years, and only recently checked into 1-800-Pet-Meds and PetCareRX. Both offer free standard shipping and I saved at least 20 percent over my vet’s office. Geesh, what took me so long to switch over?

5- Think Twice About Pet Insurance- Pet insurance sounds like a good idea, but it’s expensive, and may not cover the health services your pet needs. For example, one major pet insurance company covers the cost of spaying or neutering your pet, but not for the necessary anesthesia. Make sure to request a complete list of what services and medications are covered, and read all the fine print before making any decisions.

  1. One great dog food that we have used is Muenster Natural. We get the one with large kibble doesnt scarf down his food so fast! It also is really good at getting rid of his allergies because it is natural and doesnt have a bunch of chemicals and junk! I buy it here: http://www.muenstermilling.com
