School Year's Resolutions

family School Years ResolutionsLike many families, our life revolves around the school calendar, rather than the Roman one.  For the past few years, I've set school year's resolutions – goals I’m setting for myself as my family begins the next very busy months of the year. (You can read my current resolutions here.)

Even though my goals are similar each year, I think it's worth the effort to evaluate progress made — or not! Just like those set on January 1, I'm not always successful with my school year's resolutions.  But often the reflective process of setting the goals is as much the point as achieving them.  In fact, some of the most beneficial resolutions I've set over the years are the ones that help me take myself less seriously.

Here are a few points to consider as you set your school year's resolutions:

  • Be specific – philosophical goals may reflect your thinking process, but detailed ones will keep you accountable.
  • Branch beyond the typical resolutions to embrace those that fit a school year calendar, like back-to-school organization or schedule-wrangling.
  • Be realistic! Look at previous resolutions and tweak those that aren't working. This year I finally gave up my quest for simplicity, and changed the wording to "balance."

I hope you'll join me in our forum discussions and share your school year's resolutions!
