This summer I had the pleasure of witnessing a Robin nest. I saw every glorious aspect from the building of the nest, to the laying of her clutch to the hatching and subsequent leaving of the nest. Those babies were so fragile, so dependent on their mother for food, warmth and contact. Without her constant tending and protection, they wouldn’t survive one day. I couldn't help but be reminded of our own dependence on Christ. Without his covering, we are naked, exposed to the elements and to the trials of the world with no one to comfort and save us. Without HIS mighty wings spread over us, we would surely shrivel up in our nests and die alone. Cold, hungry, and lost. But He doesn’t leave us like that. No, instead he spreads out his glorious wings and envelopes us, warms us, feeds us, nurtures and nourishes us, through his word, his spirit and his congregation of believers. And we get to soar with him like eagles and he lifts us up with his wings.
Psalm 91:4 says,
He will cover you with his feathers,
and under his wings you will find refuge;
his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.
What a gift. What a blessing it is to have the cover of Christ.
