Simple Science for Preschoolers: Exploring Magnets

phpvt6G5Z

Most young children love playing with refrigerator magnets.  Why not take that one step further?  You can make this exploration as formal or as flexible as you'd like, here are some suggestions.

Ask your child what other household items he thinks the magnets will stick to. Have him make a list of a few things (use pictures or words). Now it's time for some experimenting.  With magnets in hand, have him try to stick the magnets to the various objects.  Help your child use the list to keep track of which objects the magnet will stick to and see if he can figure out some characteristics that determine what the magnet will stick to and what it will not stick to. Give him two magnets and let him try to get them to stick together.  However you choose to explore magnetism with your child, be sure to let him lead the fun!
