Those who know me know that I am easily amused and easily excitable. I like to call it passionate. Whatever you call it, it is that little quirk in my personality that makes me want to get involved. Sometimes (OK, most times) without stopping to think about what it is I am getting involved with.
After I learned about a Nike shoe recycling program (Reuse-A-Shoe ) that little personality quirk of mine took over. I was so excited about the program that I wanted to tell everyone I knew about it.

I Blogged about it

I contacted my son’s principle about it
I wanted to see if our school could get involved with this program. I was so thrilled when she said “Yes” that I did not stop to think about what that “Yes” meant. Until she put me in charge of the program (I don’t know why this surprised me. It was my idea after all.)
I quickly began decorating boxes to use for shoe deposits.
I put a notice in the school newsletter and placed the decorated boxes in the school hall.
Within 2 weeks we had 2 heaping boxes of used athletic shoes.
I started to get excited again as I saw the number of shoes that our small school was helping to keep out of the landfill and turn into tracks and courts.
I started to feel good about the small part I had played in bringing this great program to our school. Maybe that little quirk in my personality isn’t that quirky after all. Then my husband (with a clever smirk on his face) said “How are you planning to get all those shoes to the recycling center?”
Dang it!
Embrace your passionate side and start a shoe recycling program at your school or office. Just decorate a box, spread the word, collect the shoes, and find a shoe drop location near you.
Now, do any of you have a truck I can borrow?
You can learn what other things Lena is passionate about, her 2 beautiful children and clever hubby for instance, at OverCoffee.
