One of the secrets to great decorating is to have a stash of a few things like fabric, nests {in my case} and picture frames to decorate from. This does not mean that everyone needs to go out this very minute and purchase a carload of extra stuff just to keep in a closet. No! That is not how it is done! But it is nice to have a plastic bin full of odds and ends just to freshen things up a bit.
The way to start your stash is to learn how to shop for your home. It is really just a simple change of mindset and attitude when it comes to shopping. Those of you who already do this will find this advice boring and elementary but for those of you who have never done this before, it can be so freeing! There are only 3 rules:
1.) Purchase things for your home that you love and are emotionally drawn to.
Wow, that's simple enough but wait till you read number two…
2.) Purchase said items from rule #1 even if you don't know the exact place in your home where it will be place.
WHAT???? Stop the world! This is insane! –Is that what you are thinking? You have no idea HOW MANY TIMES a friend will ask me to go shopping for accessories with them and they will point something out that they love and say, "I would love to use that in my house but, tell me exactly where should I put it…."
You don't have to know exactly where you will put something. It is much more important that you love it and then, take it home and play with it! Try it in different rooms on different tables, hung on the wall, in the bathroom, on top of the fridge. You may not know where the best place for it is until you get it home and try it out. I always keep the tags on and receipt just in case I need to return it.
3.) Stay within your budget. Nothing will make you hate something more than paying for it with money that you don't have. Do not buy anything that you cannot pay cash for. Trust me on that one.
Now, slowly over time, start collecting things that you love, that you can afford that you don't know where you will put them and all of the sudden your decorating juices will be flowing like never before! Don't forget to utilize yard sales and thrift stores when needed. You can do this, and it can be fun! But remember, it doesn't have to be perfect to be beautiful!

I have had the tag on an end table since December because I'm still not sure I love it.
/ Glad I'm not the only one who does this. And I DO have a stash. It's a stash of things I don't use anymore. Pewter. Lots and lots of pewter. Don't ask. lol
Oh I definitely have a stash. Some people think I'm crazy but doesn't bother me. I just buy things I love. I actually feel sorry for people who don't get it.
