If you are a new gardener, knowing where to get started can be difficult. Patio gardening can be an easy way to get your feet wet in gardening.
- On a patio you have a limited space, so it will be easier to keep up with the day to day care of your plants
- A small amount of effort will result in lots of enjoyment for your family.
- Plants in pots are sensitive to variations in temperature and moisture
- Make sure their roots have room to spread and find the nutrients and water they need.
- Plant your patio garden carefully, paying attention to sun and shade, wind and water.
One of my favorite things to grow on my patio is succulents. Succulents such as jade plant, aloe, and hens and chicks seem to prefer hot dry conditions, which are exactly the type of microclimate that tends to prevail on most people's patios.
Succulents stay interesting and beautiful over the entire growing season, so they are great plants to begin with in planting your patio garden. Just make sure you don't over water!
If you live in a colder climate, you will have to take your succulents inside when the weather turns cold, but they make fabulous easy care houseplants in a sunny spot. Growing such easy plants will make even the most inexperienced gardener feel like an expert.
