Recently my husband burned his face and we rushed to the firehouse two blocks away. They were so unbelievably kind there. As a thank you I decided to bake them a yummy treat. I thought what better opportunity to do something cute! I decided to make "fireball cupcakes".
I usually love to make my recipes from scratch, but the focus today was presentation so I used a quality cake mix instead. I decided to make Red Velvet Cupcakes (red=fire) with cream cheese frosting.
For the top I wanted it to look like flames. So I used liquid food coloring (liquid is key, as I do not care for the gel food coloring) and colored the frosting orange. Then I used my fantastic William Sonoma Sanding Sugars. I would like to share about how wonderful sanding sugars are. Similar to traditional "sprinkles" I find them much more appealing as they are super fine and tend to get an all over color, as well as a slight shimmer.
Though they are available year round, careful around the holidays because the seasonal colors (now orange and black) sell out quickly.
After I had my orange frosting and red/orange sanding sugars I decided to add red hots to the top. I was careful when frosting them to make a cute fire tip with the icing. I was very please with the result!

Keeping with the theme I used a cake box, the can be found at any local craft store, and embellished it with a "fire" ribbon. While I was at the craft store I found the cutest Firemen scrapbooking stickies. I especially loved the fireman uniform so I added them to the box! Finally I added my classic "From the Kitchen of __" tag, and I was off to the firehouse. The firemen were so grateful and indeed remembered my husband from the previous Saturday's visit.
I think that one thing that has been lost over time is the art of how to truly thank or acknowledge people. Although this was a small deed, I felt it went a long way. No doubt they won't forget that "guy who burned his face and eyebrows off with his bbq pit" nor his "wife who made the awesome cupcakes in the fun box".

What a great way to say thank you. That was very sweet of you and I am sure they appreciated it.
I should make those for my dad's group of volunteer firefighters.
