The Latest in Lash Enhancement

Eyelashes

In the October issue of Vogue, an article on lash enhancement really got my attention. So much so that I twittered the following quote from the article. "Lashes are the new breasts. Women are obsessed with getting a bigger, better pair."

While I don't think I'm obsessed, I have always been on a quest for long and lush lashes. It seems that there is a lot more help out there lately. Cosmetic companies, aestheticians and surgeons are riding the new wave of lash lust with a whole slew of new and innovative products and procedures. And of course, the number of mascara choices on the market is overwhelming.

There are more ways than ever to get a bigger, better pair of lashes. Some are silly and some sound a little scary to me.

Tools To Try

Moving lash brushes are the latest low-budget tool. The SpinLash Mascara promises to make your lashes

SpinLash Mascara, Blacktheir loveliest with the spinning action of the brush, which separates lashes while applying the mascara. You don't have to use the mascara it comes with and can simply use the brush with your favorite mascara.

The Estee Lauder Turbolash All Effects Motion Mascara utilizes a vibrating brush and is sold out temporarily. Lancome also has a motion brush, the 7000 oscillations per minute Powermascara, also out of stock until fall.
Another tool that people swear by is the heated lash curler. Personally, I'll be trying this because I have never been brave enough to try the clamp tool that beauty experts swear by. I've always been worried I'll pull out the 7 lashes I do have. This wand promises to use gentle heat to bend back the lashes at the lash line, no medieval torture device needed. You can get the Sephora brand for $16.

Products to Apply

The product getting all the buzz lately is lash serum. After several weeks of use, your lashes are reportedly much thicker and longer. It can also be used on your eyebrows. There is a lot of debate about whether the ingredients in these serums are safe, but there is almost unanimous agreement that they work.

Procedures to Schedule

Lash extensions have been popular for a couple of years. This is an instant and dramatic fix, but be prepared to pay $250 to $500 for the initial 90-minute application of lashes, and touch-ups every 2 – 3 weeks are needed as your lashes naturally fall out.

An eyelash transplant is a very serious and expensive solution to very skimpy or non-existent lashes. The description of the procedure and the maintenance required after the surgery sounds so intense that it seems to only make sense in very serious cases such as alopecia or hair loss from trauma or illness.

The bottom line on lash enhancement? If you want a bigger, better pair, there are plenty of lash enhancements to fit your budget as well as your own personal sense of adventure.

I hardly use mascara anymore (my lashes are long and thick enough), but I am always on a quest for curled lashes — my lashes are pin straight, as opposed to the curly hair on my head. I use a regular clamp curler and Maybelline mascara to hold the curl.

I used to be afraid of the clamp curler, but it's really not as scary as it seems. It's also safer, in my opinion; there aren't any strange chemicals in it.

Elizabeth, agreed. Those serums are definitely one of the scary enhancements I'm not sure I want to try. Have you tried the heated lash curler? By the way, you are lucky to have dark and thick lashes. Mine are blonde. Sigh.
