There's nothing wrong with going into a furniture showroom and purchasing a matching set of furniture.  However, it's so much more fun to combine colors, textures, woods and finishes in every room!  Most people can't afford to drop the cash for all their furnishings at  one time. That can actually work to your advantage.  Rooms look more sophisticated and finished when there are a variety of styles and fabrics that compliment each other all thrown in together.

If you do have a matching set, try mixing it up and trading that end table out for the side table in your bedroom.  Maybe you can switch out a side chair for one of the arm chairs from your dining room topped with a cushion and a pillow.  I like to shop in my home first–I am always surprised at what I find.

Look at all the different finishes you can see just in this one photo taken from my kitchen looking into our family room:

*white table legs

*light wood table top

*darker wood floors

*black bench

*even darker bench wood to put your hiney on

*painted white dresser (used to be a changing table)

*dark wood armoire

*red shelf back in that other room

*black wood chair

*don't forget the porcelain potty seat–that is really the finishing touch!

It's kind of like it's been effortlessly created over time {even though it usually hasn't}.  Like when you get all gussied up to go somewhere and your honey tells you that you look beautiful and you say "What, this old thing?"

I love your rooms, and all the accents of reds. I've always liked "mismatched" over having everything all matchy matchy. :)

  2. I love this look. After our last move, we needed more furniture so instead of buying new we hit the flea markets, consignment shops and antique stores. We had a blast, nothing matches, and I love it!

Your room is fabulous! :-) Rosie

  4. Love the drapes hanging over the door way! Can you by any chance post a close up of those? Would love to see a view of the other side of the room as well! Gorgeous.

  5. I'm not sure this is allowed but since you don't have a link Margaret, go to the pages link on the top right sidebar to domestic divas. Follow the link to the Nester's blog and then on my blog look at the left sidebar for my window mistreatments. They are in there with directions on how to make them without sewing!

  6. What a wonderful room. I can imagine how great it is to cozy up with some tea there.

I LOVE your decorating style! I agree that a home looks so much more inviting if everything is not "matchy matchy." ;)

Nester — I love this look. I am going to be faithfully reading your decoration posts. Otherwise, I'm gonna have to beg you to come fix my home.

  9. The porcelain potty seat is my favorite.

I read that sentence, said huh? and had to go back and look. Oh, that porcelain potty seat. . . I thought maybe it was some decorative potty seat you had displayed somewhere. LOL!

  10. Ah the room is beautiful! I heard once that you can have up to five different types of wood in one room. I totally agree. I prefer a mismatched look to all matchy matchy. LOL

Thanks for sharing the pic. :)

That is BEAUTIFUL! I swear to goodness, someone could give you a cardboard box, $20, a hot glue gun and 12 exta long glue sticks and you'd make the most beautiful piece of furniture from it anyone has seen.

  12. That's YOUR house! When I first saw it I thought you snagged a pic from a magazine to give us an example. So beautiful! I'm loving it!

(By the way, do you long distance decorate?)

  13. what a great looking room!!!

  14. Very nice!

I have noticed after watching many of the re-decorating type shows on tv that the first thing the pro decorators do is BREAK UP the matching sets of living room and bedroom furniture sets. No 'match-y poo'.

    Lovely room.

  16. Who needs matchy-matchy when they can have a home that looks like yours. I love it! Toile and gingham…oooooh, pretty!

I have that exact table! Different chairs though, and no my chairs don't match the table. :P
