Updating throw pillows is an easy way to freshen a room. If you are growing tired of your current style, changing out pillows can start a shift in style direction for the entire room.
Please, do what I say not what I did…
Three years ago my husband and I purchased two couches to go in our new home. I chose a solid couch fabric and several of the custom-made throw pillows in a complimentary pattern. I remember gasping at the price which was around $150 a piece. I went ahead and ordered the pillows because I thought I couldn't live without them.
I have three young boys. Our living room is a LIVING ROOM. The fancy, expensive pillows didn't have a chance. They were used to build forts, wage attacks and to bolster defenses. They were squished, shoved and pummeled. They lasted about a year in decent condition. They were survived by all the coordinating pillows I had purchased at a discount store for a fraction of the price.
I now believe in the "disposable" throw pillow. I try to spend less then $20, choose a pillow of hearty construction and plan on a short lifespan. The upside is that I am able to create new and different looks with the various combinations of pillows that are still surviving my household.
Throw Pillow Tips: 1. Choose a dominant pillow first.
(pillow purchased from Pier 1)
This is my current dominant pillow. If my couch had a strong pattern, I would choose an simple large pattern or a strong solid color for the dominant pillow.
2. Coordinate other pillow to complement the dominant pillow. (red pillow purchased from Linens 'n Things)
I have used solid fabric pillows in red, yellow, blue and green to coordinate with my dominant pillow.
3. Push your couch style ahead.

(from Target)
If you have a couch that might be feeling a bit outdated, experiment with throw pillows that lead it in a different style direction. Choose modern patterns or bold solids and take them home and see how they work. Pillows are easy to return so save your receipt!
4. Less may be more.
(from Pottery Barn)
Home decorating trends are headed in a modern direction. Using fewer pillows can help you achieve a cleaner look.
5. Start taking note of what you like.

Conscious purchasing will always save you money and headache. Start noticing what pictures in magazines and catalogs you are drawn to. Be aware of the surroundings in a friend's house that encourage you to sit down and feel comfortable. Think of these things when you are shopping for your own home.
Your worn out throw pillows are a style opportunity!
I live at June Cleaver Nirvana and promise to replace that pillow before you visit.

It is funny to see this post today, Tuesday I went to the Habitat Home Store and picked up some fabric to put over my current pillows to give the room a little update.
Hugs!!!!
