Travel the World Without Leaving Home!

Sometimes the most simple things can ignite amazing learning opportunities. A great geography 'spark' is to make a picture of your children next to a famous landmark, or in an exotic location.

The picture can be made simply by cutting up copies of photographs of your children and pasting it to a travel picture. Travel brochures are great for this, or old copies of National Geographic. You could also go online and make a high-tech version. With free online Fotoflexer you can upload, edit and 'merge' two different photographs. Search google images for great travel photos.

So what do you do with the picture? The idea is to interest your children and get them asking questions.

  • Hang it on the fridge and see how long it is before they notice. No cheating and pointing it out though!!
  • Send them the picture as a postcard with some notes on the back about what they have been doing. Children love to get things in the mail.
  • Use the picture as a background on your PC – this is my favourite way of interesting them!
  • Make a Travel Journal with them, and get them to write about their experience in that part of the world. If you plan a route beforehand you can get them to guess where they will be going next.

If you vary the picture every week or so, you will cover a lot of places in a fun way. It's low key – but seeing themselves in the photos really seems to capture their imagination.
