Want to give new adoptive parents a gift that is sure to rock their world? Borrow an idea from parents who are adopting babies from China. Create a 100 good wishes quilt or Bai Jia Bei.
A 100 Good Wishes Quilt is a Chinese tradition. when a child is about to be born, the friends and family of the parents each give them a scrap of cloth and a good wish. The parents make a quilt out of the cloth, so the child comes home literally wrapped in the good wishes of his or her community.
We asked for a square of 6X6 fabric and a wish for our daughter. I also chose a fun backing that was special to me. You can make it simple, themed by color or fabric pattern, texture…you can get very creative!
100 is a nice number for a twin sized quilt, but you can make a smaller quilt or an unusually pieced quilt with any number of pieces. I scrapbooked all the wishes…many were lovely and all I needed to do was insert them into a scrapbook. I brought the quilt and scrapbooks (4 in all!) to my shower, and they were the hit of my shower, everyone loved them.
Until my daughter is old enough to transition to a new bed, I bought a quilt hanger, painted it white and display her quilt as a wall hanging.

What a great idea! After my daughter was born, my Mom and I were cleaning out some old cedar chests at my Grandparent's house. We stumbled upon a baby quilt that my Nana had made many many years ago. After washing it and doing a few small repairs, my daughter keeps that quilt with her all the time. Although my Nana passed away 10 years before my daughter was born, it's nice that she has a connection with her great-grandma.
