Waging the War on Weeds

HATE THESE?

As an self-proclaimed organic gardener, I do not use chemicals of any kind in my garden…I worry about the residue polluting the soil and getting into the water supply.  But, I have a powerful arsenal to help me wage my battle against weeds.   I am always waging the war, but frequently losing the battle in my garden.

  • The most important thing to remember is to weed often, don't wait for the weeds to grow large, the roots get bigger and it is difficult to pull them out.  Plus 15 minutes every day isn't that much time to invest in a beautiful garden! (I try to weed as soon as I come home from work, right after I pull into my driveway)
  • The best time to weed your garden is after a good soaking rain…the plant and the roots are much easier to pull out.
  • How to begin?  Simple..
  • Take two of these

  • Begin pulling the weeds out and tossing them either a container or a tarp.  Some people feel that you can compost weeds if you get the temperature of the pile high enough to kill the weed seeds, but if you hate the little buggers as much as I do…why take chances?
  • When you get an area weed free, use some weed fabric found in every big box home improvement store and spread it over the clear section.
  • Add a good layer of

Play around with textures and colors until you find something that you love.

  • Add flowers/plants and enjoy the fruits of your labor!
  • Of course, some weeds can be beautiful (I especially like Queen Anne's Lace) but weeds do choke the flowers and plants that you have spent time and money to grow in your garden.  They suck the water from the soil and absorb the nutrients that would be best used by the jewels of your garden.

Good luck with your war on weeds!
