It's planting season, and gardening can be a great activity to involve your kids in. Let them have their own small area to plant whatever they choose. Even young preschoolers can take on the responsibility of watering their own special garden. Wondering what to plant? Just because you can buy a packet of it at Home Depot doesn't mean it can be planted right now. Learn about your growing zone and when is the optimal time to plant what (visit the National Gardening Association's website for lots of information). It may be too late to plant something from seed, but if you can find small plants ready for planing, you're good to go. Super hot where you live? Oftentimes springtime crops such as lettuce and peas do well when temperatures drop again at the end of the summer. I'd suggest doing some research and then presenting your kids with a list of things to choose from, thus eliminating any disappointment at the store. Short on space? You don't need a yard to have a garden. You can build a small container to plant flowers or vegetables in (learn more about container gardening here). You can even plant a small herb garden indoors. As an added bonus – if you get your kids excited about gardening, you may just get them excited about eating the vegetables they grow!
