What to Do When the Teacher Doesn't Know the Answer

When the Teacher Doesn't Know the Answer

A homeschool — or potential homeschool — mom's biggest fear is often, "What do I do whan I don't know the answer?" The mere mention of words like algebra, chemistry or trigonometry is enough to strike fear in even the most fearless of homeschooling moms.

So, what do you do if you don't know the answer?

Find out together. One of the joys of homeschooling is instilling in your kids a love of learning; teaching them that learning happens all the time and at all ages.

Learn how together. You'd be amazed at how much more sense some of this stuff makes as an adult versus how much sense it made when you were the student. It's okay to admit to your child that you don't know everything, but that you're willing to learn.

Get a tutor. If it's something you simply don't know and can't figure out, hire a tutor…then, maybe your student can teach you what he's learned. An older student who understands the subject matter may even be willing to help.

Find a co-op. Whether it's a large, organized co-op or simply a couple of families swapping talents, pooling the knowledge of several adults is a great resource.

Seek out classes. Check with your local homeschool group. There are often classes available for homeschooled students to learn specific subjects.

What resources have you found to be helpful in teaching a subject with which you're not comfortable?
