What's for Dinner: Paté Chinois

Chinese Food is the literal translation but really does not fit this dish at all.  This is another dish from my childhood that has now made it to my grand daughters childhood.  Most "Americans" would assimilate this dish to Shephard's Pie.  Consider this the poor man's version.

Ingredients

- 2 lbs browned ground beef
- 1 can cream style corn (and any other veggie you want to include)
- 6-7 servings of INSTANT potatoes (instant is easiest, if you want to make real, well rock on with your bad self)

Bottom layer = ground beef

Second layer = Cream style corn (at this point you can layer in any other veggies – I like Lima Beans, a friend puts green beans)

Third layer = Instant Potatoes I don't smooth it out too much, but make sure it is completely covered

Bake in a pre-heated oven (350 degrees) for anywhere between 15-30 minutes.  It is very forgiving if you get sidetracked or run late.  You want those peaks to be just a hint of brown.

This is a complete meal but we usually add some crescent rolls.

For a variation, I have made this dish out of a left over roast beef dinner using the leftover mashed potatoes and vegetables as well.

Bon Appétit !

  1. Dinner tonight.
    Steaks, grilled veggies, garlic bread.

It's a blessing! Someone gave is a bunch of steaks.

Your recipe looks FAB, however, it don't have an oven :( Mine died in November…

  2. This is one of our staple meals. I like to use regular can or frozen corn we aren't big creamed corn people. And I HAVE to make homemade mashed

  3. My friends moms would make this. This is a staple in French Canadian "cuisine". I had my first taste when I was invited for dinner at my best friend's house. Pretty good. :)

Erin – I have found the "creamed" corn keeps it a bit better for reheating the leftovers. And leftover Pte Chinois is even better than first day.

Nancy – Yeppers! French Canadian we are! My mother's family hails from Montreal.

  5. Donc you might speak Francais then? :) I am from Montreal, just not French Canadian by blood. :) Now I'm thinking of poutine! LOL
Bon Appetit avec ton Pâté chinois!

  6. rachel

    It's hash :-) A total southern staple.

  7. Nancy – Nope no French. I can understand quite a bit but speaking is not my forte. The family names are Beauregard and Moran.

I see you are now here in California. I'm in Glendale. You?

Rachel – Hash? Really? I always thought of hash as grits or something like that.

Will you see the new Twilight movie New Moon on Friday?
