When I wrote this article, I never dreamed that it would lead to a discussion. Because it has, I've begun a forum on the Blissfully Domestic community site entitled "Should We Allow Our Kids to Celebrate Halloween?" Head on over and weigh in!

Sylvia, thank you so much for adding this fact about Jack O'Lanterns. I think that Halloween, like many widely celebrated holidays today, has gone through a major transformation from Pagan to Christian to Secular - much like the formerly Pagan customs associated with the Christian holiday of Christmas. We celebrate Trick or Treat night in our Christian home ,but do not make a "big deal" of the holiday otherwise - simply because the fall is already a busy and active time in our house. I hope to someday explain the history of this holiday and others to my kids, but in the mean time, they'll just know that for one night they can be a dog and a Snow Queen and collect candy from neighbors - which they will then turn around and donate to their church Cherub choir. :) Thanks again for reading and for your valuable comment, Sylvia!

We don't celebrate Halloween either. We did growing up but once I looked into all of these things we stopped, luckily before the kids came along. There's a great video called Trick or Treat? that has ex-satanists talking about what really goes on that night. Very Freaky...I don't think it's a very Christian holiday.

Also, jack-o-lanterns originated from the Celts carving the image of someone who died into their pumpkin or gourd and taking it to a place where they offered a human sacrifice. After that everyone took the flame and placed it in the pumpkin to take it home and light their hearth. Which until that point was left unlit. Sadly, there are still many occult practices still being carried on today. This is we don't celebrate Halloween.
