Word Games Rule

Despite popular opinion, we don't necessarily need expensive equipment to teach our children how to read and write. There are so many great things that we can do to encourage our children's development without even spending a dime. What about word games? Word games can be a fun way to interact with your child and also teach them to become more familiar with words and how they interact with each other.

Here are some fun word games to help your children:

Tongue Twisters- Have your child repeat a tongue twister as many times as possible without making a mistake. Turn it into a competition and see who can score the highest!

" She sells seashells by the seashore."

" Rubber baby buggy bumpers."

"Red leather yellow leather."

" Six thick thistle sticks."

Word Lightening- This game would be a great one for a long car trip or just to break up the afternoon with your children. You can start playing this with your child at around four years old and they can play this game up to age fourteen. Each player simply says as many words as possible beginning with the given letter in one minute. Players take turns picking a letter for everyone to use. One player is the timekeeper, counting the words being called out. After the results have been tallied, the winner of the round gets to pick the next letter for play.

Grab On Behind- This activity is appropriate for kids between the ages of six and twelve. The game is basically creating a word chain using the last letter of one word as the first letter of the next word. First, the players decide on a category (plants, food, animals, etc.). After picking a category, the first player chooses any word that fits into the category. The next player has to think of a word that begins with the last letter of the first word. Play continues with players only having five seconds to come up with the next word. Any player who fails to add a word in time, repeats a word already used, or uses a word that is not appropriate for the category is out off the game. The last remaining player is the winner.

In the car, a fabulous teaching game is to take a cookie sheet and magnetic letters and encourage kids to find the letters they see on signs, buildings and trucks and copy them on their cookie sheet. You can do the same thing at home with a book or magazine. It teaches best when you can also talk with them about what the word is/means.
