All right y'all, spring is just around the corner which means that yard sale season is upon us as well. And oh, how I love rummaging through the castoffs of strangers! I would guess that about 50% of the accessories in my home have come from either yard sales or thrift stores.
Throughout our marriage, we have been both poor (for American standards) and rich (for my standards) and I have always loved shopping second hand. Not only is it a thrill, a money saver, and a great way to recycle, I have found some of my most favorite things while picking through what others consider junk.
Here are some things I always keep an eye out for (the price I paid is in the parenthesis):
Small tables that can be spray painted black ($5)
Topiaries and Christmas Garland ($3) Wicker furniture ($45 set)
Children's sized wooden chairs ($5 each)
Mirrors ($5) Pillows ($3 for the black one)
Shutters, doors, old windows, glass knobs
White serving platters and dishes that I can hang
Books to read and decorate with.
If you aren't accustomed to going to these types of places I would wait and plan your first trip for a time when you can really go slow and look at things with a different perspective. Maybe go without the children at first. Once you get the hang of it, you will be able to shop second hand while on the phone and feeding your children a snack! I love things that have been loved before, they have such character and I feel as if they have earned their keep. I can't help but think that they are so happy to be loved and appreciated despite their flaws–because we all know, it doesn't have to be perfect to be beautiful!
Now, fly on over to Blissfully Domestic Living and lets all talk about our favorite second hand finds over on the forums!

A great reminder that one person's trash is another person's treasure. I have gotten some wonderful items at Yard Sales and when give a little TLC, they have become treasures for our family.
Cute stuff! I need to hit the yard sales soon. My 3 year old son loves going with me!
Oh, how I miss yard sales.
They are one of life great pleasures. As much as my husband teases me about enjoying them so much, he too appreciates the treasures one can find there.
Many of the yard sales here are more like a free-for-all, and sadly, the prices are not what I call bargains often. Still they are outlets for English books and sometimes, Western sized clothes. Not as much fun as before. That is something I am very much looking forward to when we go home on furlough, an-all-day garage sale extravaganza!
Happy Hunting
My problem is I can't see past what the used item is. For example, I never would have thought to spray those cute little tables black. I'll have to change my way of thinking!
I LOVE these things. I purchased a trunk a few weeks ago (search oriental trunk on my blog) and stripped it. I am about to post the fisihed results. It is gorgeous. I paid $55.00 for it. I think it looks like a million bucks.
Oh the joys of finding things that no one else has and never will! I love it, I especially love estate sales.
Happy yard sale season!
Yes Folks.. Its flea market Friday. I hade such a good time today. I was on my way to a favorite antique store that I haven't got to visit since last spring. I was off all day today and thought today was as good as any….so of I went. On my way I saw the first Yard Sale of the season. There was no one behind me so I hit my brakes and did a U-turn and if Ford Explore's could do donuts, we would have done one of them too. Found lot's of treasure's and goodies. Didn't make it home untill almost 6pm . Needless to say. I had a great day off.
Just wait untill you see what I bought at this garage sale and what I paid for it.
You got great things! My eye went straight to the rabbit wind vane. I'd love to find one of those at a yardsale.
