With Autumn right around the corner, department stores have bid adieu to summer inventory, and are hauling in their fall wardrobe. I know it's difficult to wrap your mind around anything having to do with wool, tweed, cashmere (okay, acrylic blend), polar fleece, or even long sleeves when you're still battling that raging case of heat rash in your cleavage; obtained by wearing a simple wife beater in one hundred degree weather (and let's face it, if you live anywhere other than San Francisco, the forecast is muy caliente), but try to ignore your anterior boob sweat and grab a few pieces for your closet.
Why? Because department stores are already thinking "winter" and are ready to unload their fall inventory (I don't care how good a deal it is, no one is presently ready to try on a parka) so take advantage of some real steals out there. A couple of things to keep in mind when purchasing a fall wardrobe:
• Layers. Days can still be pretty warm but you don't want to be caught off-guard when a sudden chill blows through your neck of the woods.
• Color. Black may be slimming and easy to accessorize but it's boring. Plus it's what everyone else will be wearing. Stand out!
• Mix and Match. Try to choose pieces that can easily go with a skirt as they will with pants.
Old Navy is my old stand-by because I can put clothes on my family without dipping into the college fund (or boat fund if that doesn't pan out for them and with three kids I've increased my odds that at least one of them will still live at home when they're twenty five). For instance This sweater is only $26.50
And New York and Company has this burgandy number on sale for $19.97!
Great with jeans and muffin top friendly! Also, please be advised that preppy clothes that resemble ivy league and/or Catholic school uniforms seem to be making a comeback. They're everywhere! Just remember what happened to the last person who tried to make a statement with that look:
