It happens to the best of us. You love to create. You love the feeling of accomplishment when you look at your finished project. But eventually you will have a day when you simply cannot find the inspiration to make anything. You may be bored with a current project or just simply can't come up with what you want to work on next. If you haven't hit it yet, you will. I happened to me recently when I was in the middle of knitting a scarf that seemed it would never end.
So what do you do to get out of that slump? Where do you go to find inspiration? Here are a few ideas to get you crafting again:
- Probably the most obvious thing to do is start flipping through your craft books/magazines. I know you have a few laying around collecting dust. You may find a pattern you forgot about or just never got around to trying.
- Dig through your stash. Whether you are in denial about it or not, every crafter has a stash. Fabric, yarn, ribbon, papers, stamps – something is bound to get you excited.
- Browse Etsy. This is one of my favorite places to go for new craft ideas. You can find anything and everything there. While I love buying on Etsy, I love it even more for the inspiration it gives me. I can always find something new I want to try to make.
- Put down that never-ending scarf/sweater/bag and find a quick 1-hour project to help you rejuvenate. It helps kill the boredom and lets you feel that high of actually finishing something.
- If you like working with yarn, get yourself over to Ravelry. There are millions of knitting and crocheting sites out there, but Ravelry has everything. You can browse patterns and other people's finished objects for all kinds of inspiration.
- Walk around your local craft store. I can't walk out of Hobby Lobby or Jo-Ann's without an armload of stuff (and a big hit to my checkbook). I always come up with tons of new ideas there that I can't wait to get started on.
- Get outside and take a walk with your camera. Take pictures along the way of colors, flowers, lamp posts, sidewalks, animals, puddles – anything that might inspire you.
- Get out the paint or scissors and glue and have some fun with the kids. Tell stories to each other as you create. A child's imagination can spark all kinds of new ideas.
- Look around your house for furniture or other areas that could use a little sprucing up. Find a chair that needs refinished or a dresser that could use some paint. Design a new wall hanging for that boring corner that needs a splash of color.
- Create an inspiration board. Get a cork or magnetic board and then fill it with pictures, magazine pages, textures, words, and anything else that inspires you. You can find some great examples of this in the Flickr Creative Boards pool.
