Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer among women, next to skin cancer. Invasive breast cancer strikes 1 in 8 women, or about 12% of women, in their lifetimes. Here are a few ways to help minimize that risk:
- Limit exposure to pesticides ~ The scientific evidence is not yet in about the benefits of organic foods but scientists agree that limiting pesticides, growth hormones and nitrates will help lower the risk. Some pesticides mimic estrogen which can increase the risk of breast cancer.
- Limit hormone replacement therapy ~ Discuss your options with your doctor but menopausal symptoms can often be managed with non-hormonal methods, exercise and diet. If you must use HRT learn about, and discuss with your doctor, short term and low dose therapy.
- Limit consumption of alcohol ~ There is strong scientific evidence linking alcohol consumption to breast cancer.
- Limit intake of fats ~ A diet with less than 29% of calories coming from fat decreases the breast cancer risk. Saturated animal fat should be limited as much as possible.
- Get physically fit ~ Aim for 30 minutes of exercise every other day to start. Start slowly if you are new to working out. Consult your physician if you are overweight. Include weight-bearing exercises such as walking, jogging or using an elliptical machine.
- Reduce stress ~ Humans are more resilient to disease when they handle stress well. We've all seen the research proving this fact. Now to incorporate it into our lives; that is the trick. Exercise is one of the best ways. Deep breathing, prayer and naps always work for me. What works for you?
- Monthly self-exams and regular mammograms ~These are easy to avoid, but should not, especially if any of your relatives have had cancer.
Breast cancer is a scourge and all we can do is take the necessary steps to help control all that's within our power to control. While we cannot modify our genetic makeup, by controlling the factors outlined above, we help strengthen our bodies and minds so that they're able to resist cancer.
