A Blended Take on Jon & Kate

family A Blended Take on Jon & KateLots of big news in the entertainment realm this past week, and though news of the Jon & Kate split quickly became overshadowed by other big news in the world of celebrity many probably were not surprised to hear news that Kate had filed for divorce from Jon.

If you are unfamiliar with these names, you can count yourself lucky. The are the parents of eight children (a set of twins and a set of sextuplets) featured on the TLC reality show, "Jon & Kate Plus Eight". Over the past several months, tabloid covers have shown their marriage looking a little shaky. The divorce announcement confirmed it.

So, what happens next? How will they juggle this arrangement with the children?

All indicators right now point to the children staying put – and the parents will rotate on some sort of schedule. Jon is rumored to be seeking an apartment and Kate will primarily live with the children in their home. Though it seems that it would limit upheaval for the children, it still seems like eight kids for one parent at a single time is a lot. Kate said on the show that she wouldn't give up holidays with her children – what will that mean for Jon?

The biggest misfortune of it all is that this is being played out in the public eye. TLC has halted taping of the show, and I hope that both parents are able to pull back from the spotlight to work together amicably to do what is best for their eight children. I hope that the family has a judge whose focus on the children allows for an arrangement that allows the kids equal access to both of their parents. I hope that they are able to find peace and civility – and I hope they always remember to love their children more than they dislike each other.

Divorce is ugly. Divorce when kids are involved can be uglier. But in the public eye? I feel pretty bad for those kids right now.

What do you think?
